Which DC tour should I take? The short answer
Tours in DC are worth it for the guide and the ride, not for entry. The National Mall is open 24 hours a day. A Capitol tour is free. A White House tour is free too, but you ask your Member of Congress 7 to 90 days ahead.
So take a tour when you want the stories, or when your feet need a rest. The e-cart tour saves you the walking between memorials. The highlights walk shows the main sights on foot.
For a guide inside the Capitol, see our US Capitol, Library of Congress and Supreme Court tours.
Not ready to book? Our list of free things to do in DC covers the museums, memorials and the Capitol.
Guided, walking and private tours compared
Pick by how you want to move: by cart, on foot or in a private car. Read what is not included before you book. Most walks stay outside the buildings.
| Tour | Included | Not included |
|---|---|---|
| E-cart monuments tour | Guide, e-cart, photo stops | Entry to paid sights, food, tips; no pushchairs or walkers |
| Private SUV tour | Hotel pickup in the city center, water | The driver does not walk you to the monuments |
| Private tour, luxury car | Guide, hotel pickup, water | Tips |
| Highlights walk | Guide | Entry to monuments and museums, food |
| Hidden halls of power walk | Guide | Entry to any building; not for people who cannot walk a mile |
| U Street walk | Local guide, "African American museum" entry | Food, transport |
| Private custom walk | Guide from your hotel, help with tickets | Entry tickets, car transport |
| Vintage cart tour | Guide, cart, photo stops | Hotel pickup, child car seats |

Hop-on hop-off and bus tours: how they work
A hop-on pass lets you ride a loop all day and get off at the stops. A guided bus tour keeps the group together with one guide.
The Old Town Trolley has 25 stops and a live guide. Big Bus runs two routes with 18 stops and recorded commentary. The 4-hour highlights bus tour has a live guide and short walks to the memorials.
Want Arlington National Cemetery too? The trolley sells an Arlington tram add-on. Big Bus includes an Arlington audio tour. By Metro, the Arlington Cemetery stop is a 5-minute walk from the main entrance. Our guide to getting around Washington, DC has the fares.
DC walking tours and themed tours
The best DC walking tour for a first visit is the 2-hour highlights walk, from €50. It passes the White House, the Washington Monument and the WWII and Lincoln memorials.
For a theme, the Lafayette Square walk tells political stories by the White House, from €31. The U Street walk covers Black history in a neighborhood off the Mall, from €80. After it, our guide to the museums helps you plan a museum day.
Prefer to walk it alone? Follow our Washington, DC itinerary.
Private and custom tours: when they pay off
A private tour pays off for a group of 4 to 6. The SUV tour is from €446 for up to 6 people. The luxury car tour is from €464 for up to 5. Split between 5 or 6, that is less than €100 each.
Both pick you up at your hotel. For a couple, the custom walk is from €110 per person and runs 2 to 8 hours.
Night and moonlight monuments tours
You can see the memorials at night for free, because the Mall is open 24 hours. The National Park Service also lists ranger-led activities, including night walks.
A tour adds a guide and the ride between memorials. The private SUV tour runs in the evening, and the vintage cart tour has sunset and evening times.
To walk the memorials yourself, use our National Mall monuments and memorials guide.
Family tours in Washington, DC and tours in other languages
For a family, a private tour with hotel pickup is the easiest choice. The luxury car tour is built for a family or small group, with a guide on board.
The e-cart tour saves little legs, but it does not allow pushchairs. The vintage cart tour does not supply child car seats.
For other languages, the SUV tour runs in Spanish and Portuguese. The luxury car tour adds Italian. The highlights walk and the custom walk run in French.
