Harpers Ferry Washington DC: Routes by Car and Train
A Harpers Ferry Washington DC day trip is about 66 miles by car, and the National Park Service says the drive takes about 1 hour 30 minutes from Reagan National Airport outside rush hour. You can also go by Amtrak, which stops in the town every day. The steps below cover the drive, the train, the fees, the Shenandoah route and why the town is famous.
Step 1: Drive from Washington DC to Harpers Ferry
Harpers Ferry is about 66 miles from Washington, DC, by the route the National Park Service gives. The park's directions page says to take the Beltway, I-495, to I-270 north. Follow I-270 to Frederick, Maryland, then take Route 340 south toward Harpers Ferry.
Plan for about 1 hour 30 minutes. That is the park's time from Reagan National and BWI airports outside rush hour. From Dulles it says about 50 minutes. The page gives no time from downtown DC, so add time for traffic on the Beltway.
The visitor center is at 171 Shoreline Drive, Harpers Ferry, WV 25425. The park recommends you start there. It has the main parking area, and the park warns that parking in Lower Town, the old part of the town, is limited. A shuttle bus runs from the visitor center to Lower Town.
Pro Tip Park at the visitor center on Shoreline Drive and take the park shuttle to Lower Town, because Lower Town parking is limited.
Step 2: Take the train from Washington to Harpers Ferry
You can reach Harpers Ferry without a car, but your choices are narrow. The park's visit page says Amtrak's Capitol Limited stops in Harpers Ferry seven days a week, and you must hold a reservation. The page does not give times or fares, so check them with Amtrak.
The park's page also lists MARC commuter trains on the Brunswick Line, on weekdays only, from Union Station in Washington to Martinsburg, West Virginia. The MARC Brunswick schedule lists Harpers Ferry among its stations. That page does not state the days, so go by the park's weekday-only note and check the times before you plan around it.
The Amtrak stop is at Potomac Street and Shenandoah Street in Lower Town. Amtrak's station page lists a platform with a shelter, and it notes stairs and no elevator at the far platform. The park puts the station about a half-mile walk from Harpers Ferry Center. Metro rail also runs between Reagan National Airport and Union Station if you start from the airport.
A bus is not on the park's pages. We found no official bus route from Washington to Harpers Ferry, so we do not list one.
| Way to go | When it runs | What the park says |
|---|---|---|
| Car | Any day | About 66 miles, about 1 hour 30 minutes from Reagan National outside rush hour |
| Amtrak Capitol Limited | Seven days a week | Stops in Harpers Ferry, reservation required |
| MARC Brunswick Line | Monday to Friday | Runs from Union Station to Martinsburg, West Virginia |
Step 3: Pay the fee and plan your day at Harpers Ferry
Entry to the park costs $20 for one private vehicle, according to the park's fees page. It costs $10 per person if you arrive on foot or by bicycle. Children under 16 do not need a pass. The pass is good for three consecutive days from the date you buy it.
The park's fees and directions pages give no opening hours. Call the park at 304-535-6029 before you go.
Start at the visitor center, then ride the shuttle to Lower Town. That is where the train station and the historic buildings are. The park says you can explore John Brown's raid, Civil War battlefields and miles of trail in the Blue Ridge from here.
A full day is enough for the town and one trail. The park does not say how long a visit takes, so plan on a day and leave when you are tired.
Key Takeaway A car costs $20 for three days at Harpers Ferry, so one day trip leaves two days of the pass unused.
Step 4: Drive from Washington DC to Shenandoah and Skyline Drive
Shenandoah National Park is a longer trip than Harpers Ferry, and no official page gives a drive time from DC. The park's directions page lists the Front Royal north entrance as 56 miles from Dulles and 70 miles from Reagan National. That makes Front Royal the entrance the park's own distances put nearest to DC, and it is where Skyline Drive starts at mile 0. Treat the trip as a long day, and start early.
For the north entrance, take I-66 west from DC to Front Royal, then take Route 340 south and follow the park signs. For the Thornton Gap entrance, take I-66 west to exit 43A, then US-29 south to Warrenton. From there take US-211 west to the park.
Skyline Drive is the only public road through the park. The park's driving page says it runs 105 miles and takes about three hours to drive end to end on a clear day. The Thornton Gap entrance is at mile 31.5. The speed limit is 35 mph in most places, and the road is generally open 24 hours a day, but bad weather can close it at any time. The driving page gives no time from DC to the drive, so add the drive out on top.
Check your GPS before you leave. The park warns that mapping services should send you to one of four listed entrances, because gated service roads along the boundary are closed to the public.
The entrance fee is $30 for one private vehicle, good for seven consecutive days, according to the park's fees page. The park takes no cash. You can pay by card or phone, or buy a pass ahead at recreation.gov. Old Rag day-use tickets are separate and are needed from March 1 to November 30 for certain trails.
The best day trips from a capital are the ones where you arrive before the crowd does.
Step 5: Know why Harpers Ferry is famous and which states meet there
Harpers Ferry is famous for John Brown's raid against slavery and for the Civil War. The park's history page names the largest surrender of Federal troops during the Civil War. It also names the first successful use of interchangeable manufacture, and the arrival of the first successful American railroad.
Three states meet here. The park's own page lists the site as "WV, VA, MD," for West Virginia, Virginia and Maryland. It places the town at the confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers, so you can see the rivers meet. The park pages do not give the date of the raid, so this guide leaves it out.

Step 6: Decide whether to go on your own or book a tour
Do this trip on your own. Things to Do in Washington DC's count of GetYourGuide listings in October 2026 found 11 day-trip listings among 207 bookable DC-area experiences, from €40. None of them goes to Harpers Ferry or Shenandoah.
If you do not drive, the train is the route. A tour is the option for a different day out. The Sunday Loudoun wine tour lasts 6 hours and is from €80 per person. It is run by Vineyard Voyages. The listing has no reviews yet, so there is no rating to judge it by, and it shows free cancellation. It lists no group size. Guests must be 21 or older with photo ID, and it runs home by about 5 PM. It includes a round-trip bus, a driver, a host and visits to two wineries. Lunch, tips, extra wine and hotel pickup are not included.
Pickup is at a Metro lot in West Falls Church, and Leesburg is another option. The day-trips page has no dc wine tours, but it lists other trips out of town.
For a history day, the Gettysburg horseback tour lasts 2 hours and is from €142 per person. It has a 4.8 rating from 549 reviews and shows free cancellation. It is run by Horse Tours of Gettysburg, and the price includes the ride, outriders and a battlefield guide. It lists no group size and has you sign a risk form. It meets at McMillan Woods Campground Lane in Pennsylvania. The listing says it is not suitable for children under 8 or for people over 254 lbs (115 kg). Tips are not included. See also Gettysburg tours, and note that the park says Gettysburg is approximately 90 minutes from Washington.
One honest limit. This guide cannot give you a train time, a bus route or a drive time from DC to Skyline Drive, because the official pages do not publish them. Check Amtrak, MARC and the park before you go.
